Nurse Apprenticeship Program Preparing Nurses for Complex Industry

With the United States finishing a full year of fighting the global pandemic, the nation’s healthcare system and its challenges have been in the national spotlight. One challenge specifically facing most health institutions is the increasing shortage of nurses. To address this challenge, Governor Ron DeSantis and Commissioner of Education, Richard Corcoran, recently announced that TruMont was awarded a Florida Pathways to Career Opportunities Grant to provide advanced training to nurses beginning their career or changing their area of practice.

“Our goal is to provide the training and resources needed to help nurses transition into practice and be confident and competent in providing excellent patient care,” Lynn Peoples, TruMont co-founder, said.

TruMont offers an evidence-based health care curriculum with a blended learning approach that is consistent with the work of the National Academy of Medicine , the Joint Commission, National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program combines online learning modules with in-person, on-the-job training.

Specifically, the program focuses on knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enhance quality and safety practices. These practices facilitate the transition of newly licensed nurses from academia to clinical care as well as nurses beginning a new area of practice.

Each module begins with an introduction, presents key concepts, and reviews their application in the practice setting. Concept topics are followed by short quizzes and scenarios structured to build confidence through critical thinking activities. Research-based case studies lead the students through situations they could encounter in the clinical setting.

In order to offer this program to more nurses, the Florida Department of Education recently approved a grant to fund the program for eligible nurses. Nurses and employers interested in the program should contact Dr. Lynn Peoples at lynn.peoples@trumont.org for more information.
